Stephen J. Hughes received a B.A. in Economics from the University of Maryland, graduating cum laude in 1976. Following employment for several years as an economist with the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics in Washington, D.C., Mr. Hughes attended the University of Maryland School of Law, where he was a Member of the National Moot Court Team and a finalist in the Meyerwitz Moot Court Competition, graduating with honors in 1984.
Steve then joined the Baltimore firm of Miles & Stockbridge, where he practiced for eight years in the areas of medical malpractice defense, general and commercial litigation, and bankruptcy law, becoming a partner in 1992. During his time at Miles & Stockbridge, he authored several articles for the Defense Line and other defense publications, and was a frequent lecturer on risk management and defensive litigation strategies.
Upon joining the firm in 1993, Steve redirected his practice in the areas of plaintiffs’ medical malpractice and serious personal injury litigation. In the course of his litigation practice, Steve has represented clients in both federal and state trial and appellate courts in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and the District of Columbia. He is currently licensed to practice in the State of Maryland, and is admitted to practice before state and federal trial and appellate courts in Maryland, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
In addition to his active litigation practice, Steve is a member of the American Association for Justice and the Maryland Association for Justice, as well as the Baltimore County Bar Association. From 2007 to 2009, he served as Chair of the Medical Negligence Section of the Maryland Association for Justice. Currently, Steve concentrates his practice in the areas of plaintiffs’ medical malpractice and serious personal injury litigation, commercial and banking litigation, and creditors' remedies.
Steve is the father of three grown children, and enjoys travel and racquetball in his spare time.
